時間というものは一時間あったら５０分しか使ってはいけないものだ、とわしは子供の時おそわった。
どんなに根を詰めても１０分は休まないとな。
朝の８時から起きて一日を過ごせば、午後８時にはほぼ完全な休息に入らなければ人間は人間でなくなってしまう。
１０歳以下の子供なら午後８時はもうベッドに入っている時間である。
眠るためでもあるが、日常とは切り離された時間のなかで、いろいろなことを考えるためです。

日本のひとは時間を隙間なく埋めてしまうのが大好きなようにみえる。
「ぎっちりした時間」が出来上がると、ちょっと嬉しそうだ。
逆に午後４時から午後７時まで「なにもない空白」な時間があると、とても不安になったりしそうである。
この３時間を、どうやってすごせばよいだろう。

ほんとうは、３時間も空いてしまったら、大チャンスなのだから、もしきみが海辺の町で仕事をしているのだったら、ベーカリーによってクリーム・バンを買って、コーヒーのボトルをもって、海辺のベンチに歩いておりていって、ぼんやり海を見ているのが良いのです。
ずっと昔のことを考えて、ああ、あんなことあったなあ、と頭の奥のすみっこで曖昧な輪郭をなしている記憶を呼び起こす。
持っているクルマのサードギアがスムースに入らないのはなぜだろうと思う。
自分にはどんな伴侶が向いているのだろう。
SFって読んだことないけどおもしろいのかな。

文明人の特徴というべきか定義というべきかは、まさにこれであって、文明人で精神が健全なら「３時間」などは、そうやってぼんやりものごとを思い浮かべているだけであっというまに経ってしまう。
そうやって３時間を過ごせないで退屈してしまうひと、というのは、それだけ自分の中の文明が破壊されてしまっているのだと思います。
